🍠 This Vegan Sweet Potato Casserole is sweet, savory, and spicy perfection! A homemade winter spice blend makes this holiday side absolutely irresistible!
Nothing beats a yummy, savory sweet potato casserole. It’s a classic dish that seriously never gets old. Most people have a recipe that has been passed on for generations, and with this recipe, I’ve taken a classic dish and just added a kick to it. The best part of this vegan sweet potato casserole recipe is that you can switch up the sweet potatoes and use vegan yams, squash, or a mix of all three. I’ve used a yummy winter-warming spice blend that is the icing on top of the cake with this savory dish – it’s so flavorful and delicious. Imagine something so buttery and sweet, but yet tasty and salty, all coated in this delicious spice blend.

🍲 Ingredients
Sweet Potatoes – These nutrient-dense root vegetables are packed with vitamin A, fiber, and natural sweetness that caramelizes beautifully during roasting. Sweet potatoes provide the perfect base for absorbing the winter spice blend while maintaining their creamy texture and vibrant orange color, which makes this vegan sweet potato casserole so visually appealing.
Winter-Warming Spice Blend – This custom spice mixture adds layers of warmth and complexity, transforming simple sweet potatoes into something extraordinary. The blend creates that perfect balance of sweet, savory, and aromatic flavors that makes this casserole so addictive and memorable.

🪄 Tips and Tricks
- Slicing: Use a mandoline for even slicing – it makes for uniform cooking and is much quicker, but be careful as they’re very sharp.
- Prep Ahead: Pre-make the spice blend to save time on cooking day and store in an airtight container.
- Skin On: Leave the skin on for added nutrition – just wash and dry the potatoes thoroughly before cutting.
- Fresh Herbs: Top with aromatic herbs like thyme, sage, or rosemary when serving for that perfect green finishing touch.

🗒 Variations
- Root Vegetables: Try parsnips, white potatoes, or yams for a unique twist on this classic dish.
- Spice Blend: Customize the winter spices based on your preferences – more cinnamon for sweetness or paprika for smokiness.
- Vegan Butter: Olive oil or coconut oil can substitute for vegan butter if preferred.

🤔 Common Questions
Yams have a different texture and flavor, with tough brown skin like tree bark and a more yucca-like consistency compared to the sweeter, softer sweet potatoes.
You can slice and arrange the sweet potatoes a day ahead, but add the spice blend and liquid just before baking for best results.
Look for a beautiful bubbly glaze and tender potatoes that pierce easily with a fork – this usually takes about 1 hour total cooking time.
A sharp knife works fine – just try to keep slices as even as possible, about 1/4 inch thick, for uniform cooking.
This version is savory-focused with natural sweetness from the potatoes, balanced by the spice blend and Dijon mustard for complexity.
Yes! Divide into smaller baking dishes or ramekins and reduce cooking time by 10-15 minutes, watching for doneness.
The foil covering for the first 30 minutes steams the potatoes, then removing it allows for caramelization while the liquid keeps everything moist.

Definitely tried this out because of the beautifully taken photo. Roasting recipes are great when I’m too lazy to full on prepare and cook something, and this recipe was so delicious! The crunchy, soft, savory, and sweet all blended together wonderfully. The mandoline slices is really what made the recipe unique. I am definitely trying that with different veggies next time.
