❤️ Why You’ll Love Big Mac Tacos
- Budget-friendly: This recipe is a lot more budget-friendly than going through the drive through for the whole family.
- Healthy: This recipe is healthier than your typical Big Mac because it is made with ingredients that you know, so you can feel better about serving this to the family.
- Versatile: Just like a burger, you can make these Big Mac Tacos your own by switching up the toppings or letting your kids build their own.

🍲 Ingredients
Monterey Jack Cheese – Monterey Jack is a semi-hard, creamy cheese known for its mild and buttery flavor, making it incredibly versatile. It also melts really well, which makes it great for dishes like quesadillas, nachos, and of course, these delicious tacos.
Smash Burger Sauce – Every Big Mac needs a creamy sauce and for this recipe I made a homemade smash burger sauce using a few simple ingredients like ketchup, mayo, relish and mustard.
👩🍳 How to Make Big Mac Tacos
Make the smash burger sauce –
- Mix together the smash burger sauce ingredients in a small bowl and set aside.
Make the dill pickle slaw –
- Add the ingredients for the dill pickle slaw to a medium bowl and toss together well. Taste and adjust the seasoning with more salt, pepper and/or pickle juice if desired. Place in the fridge.
Make the pickle pico de gallo –
- Dice / chop the red pepper, red onion, pickles and jalapeno all around the same size and add to a medium sized bowl. Add the fresh chopped dill, lime juice or pickle juice and salt and toss to combine. Let sit and before serving with the tacos, taste and adjust seasoning with more salt and/or lime or pickle juice if desired.
Make the smash beef tacos
- Mix together the ground beef, diced onion, salt, pepper, garlic powder and onion powder until combined. Divide the meat mixture into 10-12 portions (depending on how many tacos you’re waking) and roll each portion into a ball. Place the ball of meat in the center of each tortilla and press onto the tortilla, making sure it’s as thin as possible so it cooks quickly
- Spray a cast iron or non-stick skillet with avocado oil or olive oil spray. Heat over medium heat. Once hot, place the tortilla beef side down. Flatten / smash it into the pan using a flat surface (ie. bottom of a small pot or frying pan, metal flipper).
- Cook until well browned and cook through, about 3-4 minutes until browned and then flip, add about 2 tbsp of grated cheese on the beef and cook for another 1-2 minutes or until the beef is cooked through and cheese is melted (use a lid on the pan to help melt the cheese faster if desired).*Note: If you have a larger cast iron or skillet, you can cook 2-3 tacos at a time*
- Remove from the pan and cook the remaining smash tacos. **Only add more oil if the beef starts to stick to the pan**
- Serve topped with the dill slaw, pickle pico de gallo and a drizzle of smash burger sauce.
🗒 Tips and Tricks
- Smash the Beef Thin: The key to getting that classic fast-food patty texture is to smash the ground beef onto the tortilla. Use a spatula to press the beef into a thin, even layer while it cooks.
- Use the Right Tortilla: Smaller, soft flour tortillas (like those for street tacos) work best. They provide the perfect base without being too large or overpowering the fillings. If you are gluten-free, you can also opt for corn tortillas.
- Chop Your Toppings Finely: To ensure you get a little bit of each topping in every bite, make sure to chop your toppings finely.

🗒 Substitutions
Tacos are really versatile and you can truly make them your own by swapping in ingredients or toppings you like better. Here are some ideas:
- Ground Beef: You can use another ground meat for these tacos, but it will change the flavor profile away from the classic Big Mac. Try ground chicken, turkey, lamb, pork, or a mix.
- Slaw: I love all things pickle, so this slaw is so tasty, but if you prefer, you can use any store bought slaw in its place.
- Sauce: Add your favorite sauce or hot sauce to these tacos to make it your own.
- Tortillas: Use corn or wheat tortillas for this recipe. The smaller size are best!

👝 How to Store Leftovers
These are best enjoyed fresh but if you have leftovers don’t let them go to waste! Store all the toppings separately and reassemble when you are ready-to-eat.
🤔 Common Questions
You can make some easy swaps if you don’t like pickles. You can use a regular slaw, and you can swap the pickle pico de gallo for a regular pico de gallo made with tomatoes.
The secret sauce is actually just a mix of traditional burger toppings like ketchup and mustard, with a splash of white vinegar, and a few seasonings.
I find that lean ground beef is best because it doesn’t make your Big Mac Tacos too greasy when it cooks.
