Ingredients

Cosmic Crisp® Apples: Cosmic Crisp®’s are a cross between Honeycrisp and Enterprise apples. It is juicy and has the same texture as a Honeycrisp but has a long shelf life like an Enterprise. They make for the perfect consistency for these chocolate-covered apples.

Natural Peanut Butter: I find using natural peanut butter to work the best for dipping. It just has a better consistency. Look for natural peanut butter where you find normal PB in your grocery store, or in the natural/organic food aisle. You’ll want something that only has one ingredient – peanuts!

How to Make Chocolate-Covered Apples

  1. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.
  2. Dip the apple in hot water for 5-10 seconds, then scrub with a paper towel or dishcloth to get as much of the waxy residue off (this helps the peanut butter layer stay on the apple better).
  3. Cut the apple into 8-10 wedges/slices and pat each with a paper towel to get some of the moisture off the apple slice. Put the peanut butter in a small bowl and dip each apple into the peanut butter, allowing excess to drip off before placing on the parchment-lined baking sheet.
  4. Place the baking sheet with the peanut butter-dipped apples in the fridge for at least 30 minutes.
  5. After at least 30 minutes, melt the chocolate chips over low heat on the oven, stirring occasionally OR melt by microwaving in 20-second increments, stirring after each, until fully melted.
  6. Remove the apples from the fridge and dip each slice in the melted chocolate, letting excess drip off (don’t worry if some of the peanut butter mixed with the chocolate as you dip the apple slices, it will still be in the chocolate and bring lots of flavor!) Put the chocolate-dipped apples back on the parchment-lined baking sheet and once all are dipped, place in the fridge to set for at least 30 minutes.
  7. After at least 30 minutes, melt the caramels with 2 tsp of milk over low heat on the oven, stirring occasionally OR melt by microwaving in 20-second increments, stirring after each, until fully melted. Add another 1-2 tsp of milk if needed to make the caramel more drizzly.
  8. Once caramel is melted, immediately remove the chocolate-covered apples from the fridge and drizzle each with the caramel and sprinkle sea salt on each slice.
  9. Allow apples to chill in the fridge for 10-15 more minutes to fully set. Then, store in the fridge for up to one day. They are best enjoyed however on the day they’re made!

Tips and Tricks

  • How long will chocolate-covered apples last? They are best eaten fresh but they will last about 3-4 days in the fridge.
  • What are the best apples for dipping in chocolate? You can use any apples here. I find Cosmic Crisp® to be the best but if you want more sour/tart you could use green apples, or sweet you could use Fuji or Gala.

Common Questions

Why is my chocolate sliding off my apples?

Try to use apples without wax coating. You can get the wax off your apples by gently washing your apples with a brush under lukewarm water.

Do apples last longer in the fridge or out on the counter?

They prefer to live in your fridge but of course, they won’t go bad on your counter either.
