Chicken gyros on a plate with a hand reaching for the wrap

Why you’ll love this grilled chicken gyros recipe:

  • Easy: Make this recipe in under an hour (the bulk of that time being the marinating time)
  • Versatile: Add your favorite toppings to your gyros wrap
  • Healthy: Made with healthy, fresh ingredients, and lean protein

Ingredient Notes:

Tzaziki: You can totally buy your own tzatziki pre-made at the grocery store, but it’s also so easy to make on your own too. Here’s my quick and simple recipe.

Chicken: The healthy, lean protein in these is obviously the chicken. I used the Greek chicken souvlaki recipe marinade I have here to make the chicken juicy and flavorful.

How to make grilled chicken gyros:

  1. Make the chicken according to the recipe instructions.
  2. While the chicken is marinating you can prep the rest of your ingredients (cook the fries; chop tomatoes and onions; thinly slice lettuce).
  3. When the fries are done cooking, toss with a drizzle of olive oil and big pinches of garlic powder, salt, pepper and dried oregano. Set aside.
  4. Cook the chicken according to chicken skewer recipe.
  5. When all ingredients are prepped, assemble the gyros. Use the pitas fresh to toast briefly in a pan with a bit of butter or olive oil. Then fill the pitas with: tzatziki, fries, chicken, lettuce, onions, tomatoes and feta cheese. Wrap the pita up by folding in half and enjoy!

Expert Tips & FAQ:

What is chicken gyro made of? Made with a flavorful, chicken marinade, and fresh Mediterranean veggies like olives, red onion, tomatoes, and lettuce, all wrapped up in a pita.

Are grilled chicken gyros healthy? Totally. Use whole wheat pita, lean chicken, and fresh veggies. This can be a great, well-rounded meal. Especially when you make it from scratch!

What’s the difference between chicken gyro and souvlaki? Essentially how it’s cooked. Souvlaki is marinated meat (pork, chicken, beef, or lamb) grilled on a skewer. Typically you’d eat it on the skewer with a side of pita, and/or salad. Gyros are made with stacked meat that has been cooked on a rotisserie.

What is in a gyro? Skewered meat in a pita with traditional Greek salad, sauce like tzatziki and whatever other toppings you love.
