What is the difference between blood oranges and regular oranges?

Regular navel oranges and blood oranges have a bit of a different taste. Navel oranges are sweet, while blood oranges are a little more tart. Making it pair great with things like a red onion that’s found in this blood orange salad. Both oranges can be great when added to a fruit salad or eaten on their own, but I find blood oranges to be a better addition to things like salads, or more savory cooking.

Aside from the taste, obviously, the color of these two oranges looks a look different too. How blood oranges get their deep red color is from a pigment that you’d find in blueberries and sweet cherries. This pigment actually protects your cells from oxidative damage, and eating foods like blood oranges can help contribute to a reduced risk of heart disease, and help improve your memory.

How do you make blood orange salad?

I’m not here to overcomplicate your life, this salad recipe is simple. Seriously all you need to do is supreme your oranges first. To supreme them, you basically just remove the outside of the orange with a knife, slice the orange in segments, and squeeze each slice to remove excess juice. Next, you’ll just add all the ingredients to the salad bowl and gently toss.

You can also get creative with this salad. If you don’t have, or can’t find blood oranges, you can use grapefruit or regular oranges instead. You can also try this salad with different herbs of your choice. I used mint and thyme, but get crazy and have fun with it.

Voila! Enjoy, and thank me later.
